It's also possible that the network itself is more loaded down now than it was when we tested the VL600, or that there were certain factors during those times that slowed things down (such as an influx of users). There are a few reasons why this might be happening, the most obvious of which is that transmitting the signal back over WiFi to your computer will slow down the data speeds considerably compared to a direct USB connection. Those download speeds are about what we normally get when using the Overdrive on Sprint's WiMAX network, which is also often called "4G" but is considerably slower than Verizon's LTE. That's why we were somewhat disappointed that we only got somewhere between 3-5Mbps download, and strangely, between 6-12Mbps upload on a regular basis. Verizon estimates that users will get between 5Mbps and 12Mbps downloads on a fully loaded network, and we were getting something between 15Mbps and 20Mbps using the USB dongle around various parts of Chicago. When we reviewed the LG VL600 USB dongle, we discovered that the network is indeed insanely fast, so we had high expectations for the 4510L. NetworkĪs we mentioned earlier, the 4510L is designed to be used on Verizon's 4G/LTE network. Other products, including the MiFi 2200 and the Samsung LTE MiFi (also available on Verizon) only have lights to show you what's going on, so this makes things easier by being more direct about it without employing an entire LCD (like the Sierra Wireless Overdrive). There's also a series of dots along the bottom that show how many devices are connected at the moment-like many other hotspots, this MiFi can connect up to five devices at a time. The battery indicator shows how much battery is left with four bars, while the network indicator shows how good the signal is. What we like most about the 4510L is its E-ink display-not because it's E-ink, but because it keeps the display simple and easy-to-read while still giving more information than light-only indicators. The interface is predictably ugly, but it gets the job done and we don't have any major complaints. Like other hotspot devices, the 4510L has an admin interface that allows you to change various settings, such as the password to join the network, allowable MAC addresses, what kind of security you're using, the SSID, which kinds of connections are allowed, and so on. The only way it can be used is the "traditional" way as a standalone unit, or by being plugged into a traditional power outlet on the wall. (We ended up using our own.) The 4510L can charge over USB-it has a micro USB port for power-but it cannot act as a hotspot while connected to a computer over USB, nor can it be used as a tethered device. We've heard from others that this unit comes with a USB cable, but our loaner unit did not. The LTE SIM card slides in under the battery.
